Verse 2 — The Mind

« The mind is the forerunner of all things, the mind is their chief, from the mind they spring. If one speaks or acts with a pure mind, happiness follows us, like the shadow that never leaves us. »

Practice Peacefully

Identify an ordinary task today (walking, preparing a meal, listening to a loved one). Perform it with total attention and an explicit intention of kindness, observing the immediate sensation of lightness in the body.

Reflection and Explanation

In perfect reflection of the first verse, this stanza states the luminous and liberating nature of a mind aligned with rectitude. The «purity» referred to here does not stem from rigid or guilt-inducing morality, but from the clarity of consciousness freed from grasping and hatred. When our words and actions emanate from kindness, presence, and honesty, inner peace naturally follows. The image of the shadow is strikingly simple: the shadow requires no effort to follow the body, it does not tire, it never fails to appear. In the same way, serenity is not a distant reward or difficult to conquer, but the direct and organic consequence of a peaceful mind.

Cultivating kindness and clarity of mind is therefore not a sacrificial duty for others, but the most direct way to establish unalterable happiness within oneself. In daily life, this means irrigating our slightest actions with an uncalculated presence.

Each time we renounce hasty judgment or reactivity to choose understanding, we strengthen the imprint of peace within us. Happiness then becomes a fundamental state of being, a faithful presence that accompanies us through all the vicissitudes of existence.
