Verse 5 — Peace and Compassion
“For never by hatred is hatred appeased; by non-hatred it is appeased. This is an eternal law.”
Practice Peacefully
When faced with disagreement or animosity today, refuse to escalate. Respond with a calm tone or offer compassionate silence, visualizing yourself extinguishing a fire with water rather than gasoline.
Reflection and Explanation
This is one of the most universal and famous formulations of Buddhist wisdom. It states a psychological and spiritual law as immutable as gravity: frontal opposition of the same nature only amplifies the evil it claims to combat. Responding to anger with anger, aggression with vengeance, or contempt with rejection merely locks the protagonists into an endless vicious cycle. The only way to interrupt this destructive mechanism is to introduce an element of a radically different nature. Only selfless love (Metta), compassion, or benevolent understanding possess the power to dissolve hatred. This has nothing to do with weakness, submission, or passivity; on the contrary, it is an act of immense spiritual strength. It requires breaking the momentum of automatic reaction to offer a space for pacification. By applying this 'eternal law' in our daily relationships, we cease to be conduits for the world's violence and become active agents of healing and harmony.
