Stabilizing Attention (Samatha)
5-5 Heart Coherence & The Stanford Physiological Sigh
1. Welcome & Orientation
Welcome to Day 5. Your nervous system learns swiftly. Today, we stabilize attention (Samatha). A scattered mind hopping between stimuli is a micro-stress generator. Providing a single anchor calms bodily physiology organically.
2. Buddhist Wisdom & Understanding
Canon Source Teaching: Ānāpānasati Sutta (Majjhima Nikāya 118)
Samatha signifies 'tranquility'. Tradition compares the mind to muddy water in a jar. If you shake the jar to clear it, it becomes murkier. Set it on a sturdy table, and the silt settles to the bottom, leaving crystal clarity.
« Do not battle the river's current: sit upon the bank and watch the water flow. »
— Ānāpānasati Sutta (Majjhima Nikāya 118)
Trying to 'force' thoughts to vanish creates counter-tension. Samatha is not a battle against thinking, but giving awareness a simple, neutral object (breath at the nostrils) to gently return to whenever it drifts.
