Một ngày nọ, Đức Phật Thích Ca Mâu Ni đang cùng các đệ tử của Ngài trên núi Linh Thứu. Trong im lặng, Ngài hái một bông hoa, một bông hoa đơn giản, một bông hoa Ưu Đàm Bà La, người ta sẽ nói sau này. Ngài xoay bông hoa này giữa các ngón tay như một lời dạy. Chỉ có Đại Ca Diếp, vị tổ sư đầu tiên trong tương lai, mỉm cười. Ông đã nhận và thấu hiểu. Đức Phật như vậy đã truyền lại tinh hoa cốt lõi của kho tàng tâm linh quý giá của Ngài.
